John Taylor Honoured at Butchers Shop of the Year Awards

John Taylor MBE, Director of Legislation and former NFMFT President was the richly deserved recipient of this year’s Butcher’s Shop of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award presented to him at the annual award ceremony on 16 November last year at the Landmark Hotel, London.

John has devoted a large part of his time to improving the lot of butchers across England and Wales through his work with the Federation and for the best part of a quarter of a century he has served on numerous committees and working groups concerned with health and safety, legislation and training. As the Federation’s Director of Legislation and Training few butchers can touch him for his depth of knowledge on these subjects.

As well as being a long serving member of the Federation’s Executive Committee John continues to play an active role with the Meat Training Council. Along with his two terms as National President - in 1995/6 and 2010/11 – he has also served four years as a Commissioner representing the retail trade at the Meat and Livestock Commission.

He admits that over the years the amount of red tape that the sector has had to deal with has snowballed. Among his greatest achievements he counts his chairing of a meat industry committee for standards that led to the introduction of modern apprenticeships in 1995. In 2001 he was awarded the MBE.

John has been involved in the butchery trade all his working life. He first worked at the age of 12 on his father’s 30-acre farm before gaining experience as a slaughterman and then becoming the third generation of his family in the shop trade. John’s business consists of two shops, one at Earlsdon, Coventry and the other at Balsall Common.
